The Campton-Merry Institute - SILVER MEADOWS Empty The Campton-Merry Institute - SILVER MEADOWS

First item of business: we're getting questions from techs about the instances of "VALKYRIE" on some of our specialized equipment. I'm sure "VALKYRIE" has nothing to do with Project VALKYRIE that is referenced on various conspiracy theory websites. We'll ask GI if they can stand up a tech shell company called Valkyrie Technologies or some such. (Steven, that will be one of your action items for the next 72 hours.)

Second item of business: The door in what is now Vault 2 will be designated SILVER MEADOWS henceforth in documentation. Make sure the discoverer is read-in properly and on-board (Carrie, that'll be yours). Assuming the drone investigations and an initial tethered entry go well, we'll set up a team of 4 (1 security, 1 bio specialist, 1 physicist, 1 documenter) to make a brief 10 minute excursion. After a 24 hour cool down, we'll plan a longer trip. Alex, you'll be in charge of organizing the drone equipment. Shaheen, make sure the winch is installed in a timely manner, and, Li, please assemble some personnel files for a team. I'd like either of the scientists to have sidearm experience if possible. Thank you.

MEMO:
Author: Dr. Christopher Fluke
Subject: SILVER MEADOWS test protocol

Monitoring:
Standard A/V protocol plus RF, IR, UV, magnetic flux, rad, etheric (high and low wavelength)

1. Test RF transmission through anomaly.
2. If RF successful, drone excursion, otherwise tethered robot.
3. Await results from air and soil samples.
4. Tethered human explorer, <10m range.
5. Investigative team per BoD guidance: 1 security specialist, 1 biological research specialist, 1 physicist, 1 documenter, 10 minute excursion, <100m range
6. Debrief, examination, 24 hour cooldown.
7. Investigative team, 1 hour excursion, <200m range

If sections 1-4 give poor results, further investigation will focus on containment procedures including apparent range of activation.

(Admin: I was thinking "low" wavelength etheric would detect kind of background, environmental effects, while "high" wavelength would be more acute invocations. I'm not sure how much "science of magic" you have established. Either way, the detectors would attempt to match with profiles of previously examined phenomena. *do-doo-da-do-do* )

Harker replies that the equipment marked "VALKYRIE" was provided by another client of the Global Initiative.

You're able to send RF signals through the door. After a few seconds, a signal comes back. It's heavily garbled but it does have a non-negligible signal-to-noise ratio. Your technicians feel confident that, with enough time, they should be able to extract some content from it.

If you go ahead with the tethered robot, it manages to get a few feet inside before it inexplicably starts losing power and eventually dies. If you like, you're able to pull the robot back in. You do manage to acquire an air sample. The readings look fairly consistent for what you'd expect from a forest. Standard Earth-levels of oxygen and nitrogen. Slightly elevated concentration of floral and sedimentary particulates.

(RF transmission test I was thinking of was to be done via RF source on fiberglass pole. This one seems to suggest some one or something is responding to our signal?)

Look alive, people! Adou, redo the RF test immediately paying closer attention to the flux readings. Yes, you. I need Fong working on that signal.

See if that thing *points to robot* still works, dammit-Jensen, do not tell me the cost. I know we can afford another, I'm just trying to avoid delays. Have Bio call me as soon as they have cultures back from those samples.

And someone verify the backup comms on the suit, low bandwidth _and_ mechanical. We'll have an intern get two cans and some string if we need to.

***Freshman*** (Used to refer to having minimal experience with "high weirdness")
***Conceal carry license***
Gear: 9mm sidearm, "Tricorder" (or as close as CMI can afford), Aetheric detection gear (VALKYRIE products, separate from standard EM items), multispectral goggles.

Isaac Starkey
Role: Documenter
Experience: 12 years with CMI (contact Archives for full list of publications)
Gear: wide spectrum camera, aetheric camera, shoulder-mount tricorder, data uplink gear (wide range of RF, also supports VSAT)

---------------

Thank you, Li. I've only made one edit. Godeski gets the sidearm given her experience with CHARTREUSE MONGOOSE. I'll get you approved for access to at least file 001 and you'll understand. I'd rather not send in a Freshman armed. Unarmed panic is generally better than waving a loaded gun around while terrified.

Admin, can you give a run down of what CMI knows (or thinks they know) about various things that go bump in the night?

Research is starting to develop demonstrating the existence of "etheric vibration bundles". Although this would never be stated outright in an academic paper, around the water cooler people generally suspect that these are ghosts (although they sometimes miscategorize as ghosts what are really spirits in Twilight).

That's as far as the official academic knowledge of supernatural entities goes. However, the types of people engaged in this area of research are going to be more open to the existence of lycanthropes and post-biotic hematophages.

I'm going to veto any premature guessing about faeries.

The robot turns out to be easy to fix. It appears that some bad wiring caused an overload. Swap out the bad parts and it's right as rain.

The samples you collected are fairly standard for a forested area in this part of the country (West Virginia). The soil may be a touch more fertile than normal but not astonishingly so.

We are going to run some trials to see how long the door remains open. If it can be propped open and, if it shuts, try to get a reading on the forces involved.

I also updated the equipment list to remove speculative gear.

The next trial is a tethered human in environmental gear. Probably some promising ROTC member who has friends in the wrong places.

As long as the doorway remains clear, it will stay open for a little under ten seconds. When propped open, it will stay ajar indefinitely.

Communications:
RF voice and data (5Mhz - 1200Mhz)
Supports wired two way voice and data
Supports mechanical two way text
Mechanical comms provided by sheathed cables.
Arm mounted sealed keyboard with display transmits and receives Morse code using solenoid and contact switch.

External pockets hold flashlight, glowsticks (high intensity and long duration options), and spray paint.
Suit also features internal integrated harness allowing use of climbing gear and deployment/evac via helicopter.
----

"Cadet, pleased to meet you"
"Marshall, ma'am"
"That's great. You had your initial briefing and signed the NDA?"
"Yes, ma'am. They said this would be a scouting assignment?"
"Yes, here is your suit and there is The Door."
"... what the hell?"
"It does not appear to be. Inside looks very much like the local wilderness but radio transmissions don't seem to indicate it is anywhere within 50 miles."
(I'm assuming when the drone was broadcasting RF, we did not received an "echo" caused by the transmission traversing any "real" distance to our receivers.)
"..." (slightly slackjawed, quite wide-eyed)
"Now suit up. You'll be tethered to that winch, have redundant comms and environmentals, and best of all, receive course credit. We've run some experiments and we appear to be able to prop the door open. You'll head about 10 paces in, take a look around, and head back. Should take less than an hour."

(Cadet Marshall suits up.)

"Test test. Can you hear me?"
"Yes, ma'am."
"Now testing data."
(Cadet responds via keypad)
"Confirmed. Now testing mechanical backup"
(Lots of fast clicking sounds as solenoid and switches transmit text. Cadet responds via keypad in mechanical mode)
"Confirmed. Now testing mechanical failover."
(Control sends TESTING via morse code and cadet responds.)
(Cadet gives Control a thumbs up. Control nods.)
"We'll have video feeds but want you to describe what your seeing as you go. Good luck, Cadet."

(Cadet proceeds through doorway.)
